I have to agree with Joe … This is an excellent tool!! the best I have seen for resizing images! I will be using it extensively in my work. Thank you so very much!
Well, that's too bad about the interactivity.

I don't know much about coding for GIMP, but, I think that you could use GIMP's source code and extract the rescale tool, and make it into a Module, I've seen Modules that added buttons to GIMP, color selecting, paint tools, and all sorts of other cool things like that.

Maybe Liquid Rescale could be made into a Module and have the functionality as if being included in GIMP?

About a more interactive rescaling, unfortunately it won't be possible unless the plugin is included in GIMP as a tool (just like the standard scaling, the perspective tool etc.). As soon as I can guarantee to have some more time for the project I'm going to propose inclusion in GIMP.

About next version (0.7.0), it's not coming out very soon probably. The development version currently has a few imporevements and can be downloaded from the git repository. The instructions are here (there's also an RSS feed to know when new commits are up). If you want to volounteer for beta-testing you can send me an email and be notified when a new version is about to come out, this would be very apprecieted (and of course the same invitation is open for anyone who may want to volounteer for this).

Hello,

I would like to ask if, and suggest that, the next version of Liquid Rescale will have interactive rescaling? I've seen others writing that Liquid Rescale will have an interactive rescale option — I know it already has somewhat interactivity in 0.6.1 — but, I would like something more like the interactivity in Photoshop.

I know this is a hard task, I just want to know whether the next coming version (0.6.2?) is the version that you might implement truly interactive rescaling.

On that note: When is the next version coming out? Or how close is it to being released?

Also, I would like to know if there is anyway I can "beta test" each version before they are released? All I would need is source code that can be compiled :)

Thank you.

But I find it a little bit easier for some people.
The Text in the Install-Window is made with OpenOffice.org and the Icon is not totally made by myself(I think you know the Source). Only the "+" is made by me and I delete the Background of Wilber.
And I combined that all with WinRaR (now the english version)

Thanks, it's nice to have a better interface for installation. However, I have tested it and it seems that the localization doesn't work as expected: did you use the latest Windows zipfile? Also: would it be possible to have the installer interface turned to English?
If you created this with a free program and you have a configuration file of some kind, and you upload it, I could use it for next releases, as well.

Correct for a some the help seems working, but for most a workaround is needed (as locate the index.html file of the help, open with the browser and bookmark it to get it at hand, anyway in that way context help and the help bottom on the plugins do not work, and i didn't check if the additional help pages of the extra plugin are available )

I'm removing the page on Deviantart and edit the message on Gimptalk to point directly to this wiki.

As a side note i did some experiments to use LqR to animate a photo of a landscape simulating camera movements and results are good as i supposed ( they still need some post editing, basically to resize back, i should find a way to do it in batch…and a bit of cropping to enhance the movement illusion ) at the moment i have only the rough material 4 quite gigantic xcf files (to simulate 4 different kind of camera movement on same image ) as they are no too exciting but once assembled should look fine as example

Thanks, I have uploaded it.
I have decided to keep the old directory structure, though, because this should be the correct way to install it, and this increases the chances that someone might find a way to fix the localization and the help pages issues. Furthermore, I'm not really sure that it isn't working for anybody (at least, all the people who have been compiling it agree in saying that everything works fine on their systems).
However, I have added a section to the installation instruction page for people willing to install the plugin locally, based on your notes.

That's very good news and would solve a long-standing issue. However:

the windows zip file you linked to does only contain the help files, while the FILES_TO_INSTALL folder is empty (i.e. no plugin there)

please, only use the News forum category when a new version is actually uploaded on this site

It would be much better (and easier) if you or François send me the zip file by mail, or upload it here and notify me (but the mail is a better option to me).
Then, if you want to improve the installation instructions, we can do it on the Installation instructions page on this site. This is open to discussion.
Besides, I see no point in uploading those files (with no version number, BTW) other than here or in a site offering software to download.

I would really like to let the new, fixed version available as soon as possible, hope to hear from you soon.

[note: I didn't check the deb files yet]

First, sorry for the delay…

About real-time scaling and such: the Liquid Rescale implementation of the algorithm does support it (in theory): it builds a visibility map and uses it to decide which pixels to show, and of course also to decide where to insert seams for enlarging.
So the anser is: yes, it avoids enlarging every time in the same place if possible.

The video TDZc3HnKp8o is about another program I don't know anything about, but the explanations you proposed seam quite reasonable.

About working in batch mode : it can, from inside the GIMP. I wish to split the code at some point and make an independent library, but I don't know when.

Video filesize: I think there are far better compression methods, which avoid distorting the image! If you were wandering about aspect ratio instead, it is possible in principle but I wouldn't count much on the quality of the results … unless you want to create some kind of liquid effect in a video (that would be interesting).

Okay, apologies in advance for the high density of unknown information.

I read of a problem that some implementations of this technique have (YouTube video id b39R8eHyvmw), and I'm wondering if Liquid Rescale has sidestepped this problem, or if it should become a feature request.

Here's the text:
(the video's program appears to not…)
"get hung up in any spots, and continuously remove from the same seams.
I've seen a few people try to write their own image carving before… and they usually make the mistake of 'real time' carving, which generally gets hung up on the same seams over and over.
Do you use the seam ordering method described in the original idea? (Caching seam pixels in order of removal, before removing any seams.)"

My eyeball of one video that may not be of the same program, (I'm not sure, check yt id TDZc3HnKp8o says "yes, this is a problem" but I'm a newb to the whole subject.

It may also only appear to be a problem in the video due to image features (painted line) that make it easy to detect distortions, and the use of the "delete" option may bias/require the lines removed to be near that object for awhile.

I only found a few videos of the Gimp plugin, and none of them in real time like this vid of the original method: vIFCV2spKtg.

And lastly, video questions. It doesn't seem possible yet to use a GIMP plugin with VirtualDub, and it sounds so hard I won't ask. Can this plugin work in batch mode? And, most-highly-speculative-question is, is this technique (find lines of least energy) feasible in reducing video filesize?
